Exploring the Sichuan Dazu Grottoes in China

Situated 2 hours away from Chongqing is the Dazu Grottoes. These are grottoes are scattered around Dazu County, Chongqing and contain almost 50,000 Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist stone carvings that date back to 7th century. The photos here are taken from the Baoding Mountain (寶頂山)group of carvings. Many of these statues stand several meters high and are intricately carved, clearly reflecting the dedication and commitment of the craftsmen and their religious beliefs.

Walking through the area, and noticing the remoteness of the area (it is quite literally in the middle of no where), it makes me wonder how or why they chose this area for the carvings. Reaching the grottoes can be done by taking public bus from Chongqing to Dazu City, and then taking public bus or taxi.

The area has been declared a UNESCO heritage sites and more information can be found here
